Catastrophic damage to the B&O Railroad Museum Roundhouse
On the morning of February 17th, during the storm that dropped a record 28.2 inches of snow, half the roof of the 1884 Baldwin Roundhouse collapsed. The widely recognized signature building served as exhibit space for the B&O Railroad Museum and normally hosted 160,000 visitors annually. Repairs are estimated in the millions of dollars. The Maryland Historical Trust pledged to help pay some expenses not covered by insurance, but private donations are also needed (see sidebar).
The Roundhouse was supposed to be the setting for a gala featuring Governor Ehrlich on the evening of March 1st. The Fair of the Iron Horse 175, Festival of Trains (originally scheduled June 28th through July 3rd) has been cancelled. The exposition was to commemorate the 175th anniversary of American Railroading with the museum as its birthplace.
The restoration time frame will be announced during a press conference at the Museum scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 12th.

Snow delays Lombard Street conversion
Road work changing West Lombard Street to 2-way traffic was originally scheduled to begin Monday, February 17th but the snow storm cancelled those plans.
Work is now scheduled to commence on Monday, March 17th. Conversion will begin with widening the intersection and installing a traffic island with curb replacements at West Lombard Street and Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. The project will include signal modifications plus re-striping of Lombard between M.L.K., Jr. and Fulton.
While signs have been up for several years, it appears to be finally happening. One block of West Lombard, east of M.L.K., Jr., already became 2-way at the end of December, 2002.
NDC part of Austin Grills First Monday
On Monday March 3rd, the NDC (Neighborhood Design Center) has been designated by the Austin Grill to be part of their First Monday program that helps local non-profits.
For those tired of the cold and snow, here is an opportunity to get out of the house, have great food and drinks, and help the NDC. After 5pm, a percentage of all designated food and drink receipts will be donated to the NDC. To have the donation count, the server must be notified of the intent to support the Neighborhood Design Center and NDC must be written on the receipt.
